Modern Architecture- Golden Gate Bridge, San Francisco

I have always watched Travel Channel's Wonders of the World, Wonders of USA and similar programs. I wanted to visit all those wonders from all the countries. Living in San Francisco Bayarea provided me with an opportunity of driving over one of the Man-Made wonders of USA- Golden Gate Bridge every other weekend! American Society of Civil Engineers have declared it as one of the modern wonders of the world. This bridge is one of the most visited and photographed in USA.

Some facts (from wiki)- The bridge spans Golden Gate, an opening that connects San Francisco bay with Pacific ocean. It was completed in the year 1937 with the main span of 4,200ft making it the second longest suspension bridge in USA. The official color of the bridge is international orange (orange vermilion) which complements the natural surroundings making the bridge a beauty to behold!
Walking along the bridge- watching the traffic, ocean, ships, sail boats, para-sailers on a summer afternoon or evening is an amazing experience! Tourists come in hordes. Whoever visits California visits Golden Gate Bridge. Photographers flock the surrounding areas- Marin Headlands and San Francisco Peninsula, to shoot this bridge in every angle, even in freezing cold. I was there few times too to get some night shots! It is the most photogenic bridge I have ever seen!

There are green rolling hills around the bridge from where people can have great views of the bridge with the Pacific Ocean or San Francisco Bay as background. Evening through night, the lights on the bridge and their reflection in the ocean create magic that pulls crowds. The reflection almost looks like molten gold!

People commit suicides by jumping off this bridge. Golden Gate bridge has the highest number of suicides in the world. There are many measures undertaken to reduce number.  Why would anybody decide to die after witnessing such a beauty?

The bridge is part of CA-1 (Highway-1) which is a beautiful shoreline highway on California coast. The bridge has a speed limit of 45mph and there is a toll-fee which keeps increasing.
Morning or evening the Golden Gate Bridge shines as a beauty and a wonder of the world!

  2. Hi there - Its such an icon - much like the Sydney Harbour bridge.

Shame that people get to a place where they feel the only option is to jump.

    Cheers - Stewart M

  3. The bridge looks magnificent! I have been to the London bridge which is also awesome, but it isn't as big as this.

The sealink road in Mumbai is also amazing. And yet again the toll is continously increasing.
